What happens once you've booked your project with your chosen voice over artist?
Do you need to attend the recording?
How long will it take?
What if something changes?
Every voice actor works slightly differently, but here's a guide to how I like to work with my clients, making the whole experience as straightforward and stress-free as possible.
Step 1 – We Talk About Your Project
Everything starts with a conversation.
Whether you've already got a finished script or you're still putting the final touches to it, we'll discuss what you're creating (over email or on a call) and what you'd like the finished recording to achieve.
We'll cover things like:
Who your audience is.
Where the recording will be used.
The message you want to reach your target audience
The style you're looking for.
Your preferred timescale.
Any pronunciation guidance.
Whether you need one file or multiple files.
The more I understand about your project, the better I can tailor the narration to your audience.
Step 2 – Preparing the Script
Before recording begins, I'll review your script carefully.
If I spot anything that might cause confusion—perhaps an unusual pronunciation, a repeated sentence or something that doesn't quite flow naturally—I'll check it with you first.
It's always easier to ask questions before recording than to make assumptions afterwards.
Step 3 – Samples
As mentioned, voice over artists have slightly different ways of working. Some offer revisions as part of the order.
I don't offer free revisions, however I do go back and forth with you, giving you samples with a variety of different reads, in various paces, tone and delivery. This is your opportunity to provide me with either your choice of favourite read, or feedback for the next round of samples, until you're happy.
Sometimes it's tricky to communicate what you're looking for, so at any time we can jump on a call, or even a live directed session, where we can work on the script together with your direction and guidance.
Step 4 – Recording
Once everything has been agreed, recording begins in my professional home studio.
Every project is recorded with care and attention to detail, focusing on clear delivery, natural pacing and consistent sound quality.
You'll receive the draft of the audio for you to approve.
Step 5 – Editing and Quality Checks
Recording is only part of the process.
Before your final files are delivered, I'll edit the audio to remove any mistakes, unwanted breaths where appropriate and ensure everything sounds clean and consistent.
For audiobooks and larger productions, additional editing and mastering may also be required.
If you're looking for a fully produced audiobook ready for distribution, I can introduce you to trusted audiobook production through Indie Audiobook Productions.
Step 6 – Delivery
Once the recording is complete, I'll send your files in the format we've agreed.
This could be:
WAV
MP3
Individual files
One continuous recording
Labelled chapters
Module-by-module audio
Every project is different, so we'll agree the most suitable format before recording starts.
If your project requires separate files—for example, eLearning modules, IVR prompts or presentation slides—I'll record and organise them exactly as agreed.
Step 7 – Revisions
Sometimes a small change is needed.
Perhaps a line of text has changed, or a pronunciation needs adjusting - That's completely normal.
Any mistakes on my part or incorrect pronunciations of course, that's on me and I'll sort this for you.
Script changes or preference changes if you change your mind on your original instructions, these will incurr extra charges - so it's best to make sure you (or your client) is happy with the script and sure of what they want.
If your client isn't sure from the outset, you can let them hear and choose from the samples at the beginning of the order process. Alternatively you can request more than one version from me (which will be charged at the normal word count rate).
I'll always do my best to make the revision process straightforward, and we'll discuss any changes clearly so everyone knows what's included before recording begins.
Good communication helps avoid surprises.
How Long Does It Take?
Turnaround time depends on the size and complexity of your project.
A short commercial or telephone greeting may be completed within a day or two.
Larger projects, such as eLearning courses or audiobooks, naturally take longer because they involve more recording, editing and quality checking.
If you're working towards a particular deadline, let me know as early as possible and I'll always do my best to accommodate your schedule.
Do I Need to Direct the Recording?
Not usually.
Many clients are happy to leave the performance in my hands after we've discussed the brief.
Others prefer to join a live directed session online so they can give feedback as we record.
Both approaches work well, and together we'll choose whichever suits your project best.
Final Thoughts
Working with a professional voice actor should feel straightforward, collaborative and enjoyable.
From our first conversation through to the final delivery, my aim is to make the process as smooth as possible, keeping you informed every step of the way and delivering audio that's ready to use with confidence.
Whether it's your first voiceover project or one of many, clear communication, careful preparation and attention to detail make all the difference.

🎙️ Top Tip from Nicky
The best voiceover projects begin with a good conversation.
Don't worry if you're not sure about file formats, timings or technical details - that's all part of the service. If you're unsure about anything, just ask. A quick chat at the beginning often answers questions you didn't even know you had.
